Could citizens of a oppressive government e.g. Libya break away and form their own micronation, then contact a already well established democracy e.g. US for economic support and protection on the basis that it promotes that contrys ideals?

Could you stay in a country with allot of unused land like a desert close to ocean,buy the land fair and square then go to the u.n. to get acknoladged as a country make a treaty with the country you are in and the fly your flag?
There are so many old war ships going for cheap,you could easaly buy one and anchor it in international waters?I would just choose carfully where to anchor.I think If more countrys got devided into smaller countries the world would be a better place eg,America.I fear not everyone would agree!But thats alright,I know im right!lol

I’d like to start a country called the “LFN Republic” which would have Lingua Franca Nova as its official language, to help expand and develop the languuage internationally.

Mr Oats, im not sure you are aware of this, but the currency value is determined by the economy. This would only work IF you had a fixed rate.

But about the money issue, couldnt you just print loads and loads of your own currency, then persuade travalex to change it or something?

There are A LOT of islands up for sale, in almost every part of the world. One of the “island broker” firms even advertises that “if you can afford a car, you can afford an island”. The catch is that, even if you purchase such an island, all you will get are land ownership rights. You will still be subject to the government of the country where the island is located.

But surely it should be possible, for an additional fee, to get some cash-strapped Third World country to sell you sovereign rights to go with the island. You would probably have to sign a treaty, similar to the one between France and Monaco, agreeing to exercise your sovereignty in a way that serves the interests of the country selling you the rights. So things like money laundering would be out of the question. But, hey, if you want to just “do your own thing” in your own country, with your own laws, the arrangement should work just fine.

The Montevideo Convention requires a state under international law to possess three things: 1) a defined territory; 2) a government; and 3) a permanent population. It doesn’t specify how large the “permanent population” has to be; and it doesn’t make statehood dependent on international recognition. So it shouldn’t be too hard to meet the requirements.

A fourth option might be to start a country on a large freight ship or cruze ship, you could even build large hexigon shaped hulls and then add more as the country grew. This would be much cheaper then 50 mil for a fancy oilrig cruze ship hybrid
