Thebookr.com is a site I was contracted to build last year, and it has finally launched!

Joyce and I met up at a hacker meetup in Mountain View, CA last year. She was looking for a developer to make the idea a reality. I liked the business idea and technically it was somewhat similar to UniversityTutor, so we worked out a price and I went to work.

I think it turned out really well.

There are a few reasons I think this could be a really good business for her.

First, the idea of building a marketplace online has turned out to be one of the best types of businesses. Whether it’s Airbnb, iStockPhoto, eBay, or CarWoo!, the internet has made plenty of markets more efficient.

Second, the fashion industry is one of the few industries that hasn’t been disrupted yet. There are still brick and mortar agencies taking outrageous fees (about 40%) as commissions and slowing down communication between bookers and talent.

The site is perfect for retailers or people doing commercial work to find talent for their next shoot. Or models (even if it’s not their full time job) looking for additional work.

Brian, Love the site, you said you worked out a price, I am looking for a Simular site.
Not for models, but with the same sort access for individuals.

Could be anywhere from $5k – $20k to get a site like that built, with $10k being average. Hope it helps!

Not knowing that much about the fashion industry, I wonder why it has been so slow to embrace an online market place? You would think that matching models to jobs would be easier than all the online dating sites.
I guess some industries are so entrenched that change comes slow.

Yep it’s interesting how consumer internet companies have advanced faster than business sites. Not sure why that is.

Great work!

There are times when our company needs models for our products and we actually find it time-consuming to call up agencies and look for the right model. With sites like these, the time it would normally take for us to find a model would be dramatically reduced and we would be able to get more job done.

Hi Kathlyn,

I am curious about your comment on it being time consuming to find a model via agencies. I thought part of the value add for agencies was to take the stress of finding the right model off the hands of their clients? Which makes me wonder if a site like Thebookr.com has any other value to clients other than the cheaper commission they charge?

What a terrific creation that website is. Clean and fresh and a perfect fit for the business it presents to the world.

I am really glad I stumbled upon this place even if it does highlight my development inadequecies and show me how far I have yet to go.
