This actually is a really good article. I didn't feel it had an arrogant tone to it at all. It definitely helped me to understand the difference, as I've been struggling to distinguish between these differences these days. But I am so psyched now that I'm on the road to financial freedom. I've been traveling this path now for 4 or 5 years. It's been a true challenge, but I've learned SO much about myself and what I'm capable of doing. I do agree with you, Brian. People should pick up RK's books, they are SO informative. You will learn what I've been learning in college all these years, except you're going to be using this knowledge to MAKE your money empire. One of the things RK has said in his books that has really stuck with me is "Mind your own business". So I've been focusing on learning about the different asset classes. So far, I've tried 3, I've been successful at 2 of them. Now I'm going to go into the last one I haven't been into yet. I have a mentor already so I'm learning tons! It doesn't matter what you decide to invest in, just get educated!

Interesting article. And definitely something that I have been thinking about this year. I feel that we are so brainwashed (I don't know if the brainwashers' intentions are good are bad -- doesn't matter) to think that investing in the stock market (401k/otherwise) is important. And while it may be important to those who have jobs (since it provides a second source of investment/revenue/business/safety), for those who are self-employed/business-owners (S and B in Kiyosaki's quadrants), investing in one's own small business is likely to yield better results. I am inclined to (gradually next year) terminate my Fidelity investments.

Retiring investments could be expanded with the aid of self-directed IRA. These types of plans help the account holder to invest in a various of alternative investments and this includes investing in real estate, stocks and gold.

For those of you who have accumulated an IRA nest egg and would like the financial freedom to now convert this to passive income in the form of a real estate investment, with all the tax advantages that come with rental property - check out the OUTSIDE method of investing in real estate by utilizing an IRA or 401k rollover. You don't have to wait until you are 59 1/2 to be able to benefit from your years of retirement savings. This method applies much of Brian Armstrong's financial philosophy.

Hi Brian - I was wondering how you went about publishing your book. Did you go through a publisher, or do it on your own.

Thanks,

This reminds me of when they updated the 401K info when I was still at my full time job.. They had 2 meetings w/ the "financial advisor" (who's got a job, by the way) where half the company would go to the first one, and the other half the second one.. (the company has a total of about 25 employees so this wasn't a big deal).

Everyone was wondering where the owners were (husband and wife, a family-owned business). They were trying to figure out why they weren't at the meeting..

I wasn't about to try and explain to them that the owners probably make about half a million a year combined and that "the business that YOU are building for them" is going to BE their retirement income.

It's the difference between "leasing" your job, or "owning" a business. One you have equity, the other you don't.

interesting, very interesting.

I'm in the UK, wondering how worthwhile it would be here, only 22 so haven't started planning for retirement just yet, although become eligible for company pension contributions in a few months (100% match up to 20% of salary). Also not sure about penalties for cashing out etc, definitely something to think about though!
