23 Jul 2008Today, I made a guest post on SmashingMagazine’s website and it looks like it sparked some controversy!
Many readers as a result have come to this website. This is a good example of how guest posts can help you build readership.
Check out the article when you get a chance, and for SmashingMagazine readers, hopefully this site can help you out if you’ve ever thought about working for yourself. It’s easy to subscribe to get future updates (and get 3 free books in the process). Thanks for stopping by!

very interesting post. I work in a small design firm as an intern, and my first project has been updating the company website. I actually had to fight my way to convince the owner to emphasize how important and valuable our website is as a marketing and sales tool, apart from the regular sales tantrum. I will print this article out and give it to my boss. He’s prolly gonna feel that I challenged him by doing so, but hey… I can always show him the numbers ! Thank you.

Thanks for the kind words Subi. Good luck convincing your boss, and you are right: proceed with caution ;)

Don’t feel bad about all the negativity. The point of what you said is valid and the debate seemed to focus more on what example you used rather than whether your opinion was valid.

I don’t think you have a need to feel defensive about your article. Many Smashing Magazine readers – such as myself – are not “design-centric.” I have worked on the account side of the online marketing industry for over 10 years and am now just beginning my journey into freelance design. I agreed with your article and do believe the two positions go hand-in-hand.

Hi Brian, I frequent smashing magazine and your article hit a chord with me. While I think you made some valid points in your article, I was concerned that most of the builk of the article was misleading. Primarily, I think it poorly positioned the roles and responsabilities of a web designer to a client, specifically when it came to the communication points. In the spirit of healthy debate, I’ve posted a commentary.
