Giving someone a genuine compliment, is something I've always tried to do. Sometimes I lapse and have to purposely go about it again. However, its really an amazing evolution; it can become a habit rather quickly! You described, paying a compliment takes the focus off you, and indirectly helps you; I don't think its an indirect correlation at all! When all we think about is ourselves, we become our universe; in which everything is huge! When we think about others, we see its the universe that's huge and not ourselves! It helps us keep perpective on what's really important. Another phenomena in complimenting others, is how positive thinking releases all those good endorphins. I bet you were smiling, at least to yourself, each time you sent a complimenting text. Smiling and laughing, also release those wonderful endorphins. Just as a yawn can be contagious, smiling can be too!

I've tried teaching my children this phenomena, as a teenager my son thinks I'm nuts. He says he's not going to lie to someone just to be nice, haha. I tell him you can always find something nice about someone

This is good stuff.

Saying nice things costs us nothing and makes others happy. Perhaps one of the greatest investment ROI's ever. (Looks like this has something to do with business, after all.)

Thanks, Brian.
