How to Quit Your Job and Start Your Own Business
Part of the reason I blog is to build brand equity.
Call me narcissistic, but I think it’s important to control what comes up when someone Googles your name. People decide all sorts of things about you by Googling you. Business deals, speaking opportunities, and (if I cared about such things) getting a job can all be determined by your results in Google.
Until recently, what came up first in Google when I searched for “Brian Armstrong” was this clown. A two bit, WWF wrestler named Brian Gerard James.
You got that right, he isn’t even named “Brian Armstrong”! Apparently that is one of his “ring names” along with “The Dark Secret” and “The Road Dogg” with two g’s. LOSER! How lame does this guy have to be to STEAL my name (and Snoop Dogg’s double g’s) just to sound cool. Everyone knows the WWF isn’t even a real sport!
Anyway, this has been bothering me for some time. And luckily, my day of reckoning has finally come because the last time I Googled my name, StartBreakingFree.com now ranks above the so called “Road Dogg” Brian Gerard James.
Good bye Mr. James, you just got a straight up “Google Piledriver” from the REAL Brian Armstrong. If you even had a blog, my blog would kick it’s ass.
What comes up when people Google YOUR name?

Actually I just google searched “Brian Armstrong” and the wrestler’s Wikipedia page is still the #1 result. Looks like he kicked out at the last second…

I think by writing this article and linking to that wikipedia page I might have given it a credibility boost. I’ve removed the link to his page, hopefully it will go back the the “correct” ranking :)

Would the real Brian Armstrong please stand up? hehe
yea, my name is Adam Holland – not near as popular as your name i’m sure.. but there’s TWO other ‘Adam Holland’s above me on Google the last time I checked..
..One of them is a musician (who I think totally sucks) and the other is a blogger who discusses anti-semetic events.. BLAH! That’s NOT what I was hoping people would see when the Google me!
(update – I’ve beaten out the musician, but that blogger is still beating me!!)

I see you’ve got your name on your site. Maybe getting an about page with your name in the title will push it to the next level!

I just made a check of this for my own name.
And the top result was a webmail page from an e-mail I sent in 2002!
~
Another entry had the user name that I use for EVERYTHING (banking, you name it); and my real name.

Man talk about a security risk!
I fixed that. But I guess i’ll have to start promoting my personal website better.

I get the Wikipedia entry for Elvis’ dead manager. I’m not sure I’ll be able to bump that guy off.

I bet you can do it Tom. After all, he is dead and won’t be much competition.
